Labor Day Facts

1. Started in 1882

2. Oregon first state to make holiday in 1887

3.  Became a federal holiday in 1894 and celebrated by 30 states at that time.

4.  President Grover Cleveland fearing conflict after the death of a number of worker a the hands of the US military and US Marshalls rushed the approval  of this holiday through congress.

5.  The original celebration outline was to include street parades . The strenght and spirit of the trade and labor organizations was to be displayed.Those that participated in the parages had to forfeit a day's wages.

6.  Some retailers claim this day to be the largest sale day, second to the day after Thanksgiving( Black Friday)

7.  Celebrated as the symbolic end to the American summer.

8.  Start of National Football League and College Football seasons.

9.   Most American schools resume the day after Labor Day.

10. Official end of wearing the color white.
